Endodontic Retreatment

Endodontic Retreatment

Endodontic retreatment is a dental procedure that is performed on a tooth that has previously undergone root canal therapy. It is done when a tooth that was previously treated does not heal properly or becomes painful or infected again. The goal of endodontic retreatment is to remove the previous filling material, disinfect the canals and root tips and refill them. The process of endodontic retreatment is similar to that of a traditional root canal procedure, but it may be more complex due to the presence of the previous filling material.

The steps include:

First, the dentist will numb the tooth and surrounding area with a local anesthetic.

Next, a rubber dam (a sheet of rubber that isolates the tooth) will be placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free from saliva during the procedure.

An opening will be made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.

Using small instruments, the dentist will remove the previous filling material from the canals.

Then the canals will be cleaned and disinfected to remove any bacteria or debris.

The canals will then be filled with new material, such as gutta-percha and sealer.

Lastly, the tooth will be sealed with a filling or a crown to protect it and restore its shape and function.

Endodontic retreatment can be a more complex procedure than a traditional root canal and may take longer to perform. The success rate of endodontic retreatment is generally high and it can help to save the tooth and prevent the need for tooth extraction.
